When fields are discovered DSF saves the information to its own database, separate from your physical database that holds your company's data. Snapshots are simply backups of the DSF database.
Snapshot Manager can be access from the File tab of the main menu:

Snapshots can be taken automatically during specific events throughout the system. These setting can be changed on the Snapshot Options screen.
Manual Snapshots
A user can take a Snapshot at anytime with Quick Snapshot. This will generate a random name for the Snapshot and backup the current system immediately. Using the Create option will allow you to name the Snapshot yourself.
Snapshots can be used to save your work before any changes are made. Thus, allowing you to revert back to a previous state. Consider Snapshots as a safety net.
Restore
A Snapshot restore is usually only done if something goes wrong.
Purging Old Snapshots
There is no need to worry about Snapshots using up all of your disk space. They are very small in size and have a built-in data retention policy that will delete old or excessive Snapshot files automatically. The retention policy can be changed on the Snapshot Options screen.
